Gym Leader Interview

SPLI: Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions about your Gym! There are lots of really interesting Psychic type Pokémon, so we were wondering which Pokémon on your team is your personal favorite?

Shellshock: Malamar, because of its Contrary Ability.

SPLI: Which Pokémon game do you prefer, Pokémon X/Y or Pokémon OR/AS?

Shellshock: OR/AS, because it gives me access to Move Tutor Moves, ability to let me soar anywhere I want, being able to use two different Bikes at once, and many others.

SPLI: Have you ever played the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG)?

Shellshock: I used to play the TCG, both Casually and Competitively, until 2011.

SPLI: Wow so you are a really active gamer! Are you working on any other projects right now?

Shellshock: I am one of the Admins of StreetPass NYC. I also do some Live Streams of games, which you could follow me here (http://twitch.tv/shellshockprime) and here (http://hitbox.tv/shellshockprime).

SPLI: Thank you for taking the time to speak with us! We wish you luck with your future Psychic Gym challenges!

If you would like to challenge Shellshock, please visit the Psychic Gym page and fill out the challenge form! While you wait for your challenge to be accepted, you can also scan Shellshock’s Secret Base QR code, which has a small preview of his Psychic Gym team!

Gym Leader: Derrick

Battle Format: Singles – Flat Rules

Accepting Challenges: Everyday from 7PM – 12AM, and Weekdays from 8AM to 12PM

Gym Leader Interview

SPLI: Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions about your Gym! First of all, we were wondering why you chose the Normal Type for your Gym?

Derrick: I feel Normal Types are the underdogs of the world.

SPLI: Your Gym uses Flat Rules and Singles Format. What made you decide to use these rules?

Derrick: Nothing beats 6 v 6. I think there aren’t too many rooms for tricks, and a lengthy set up can be your downfall.

SPLI: We know it’s hard to choose one, but which Pokémon on your team is your favorite?

Derrick: Stoutland!!! I think he is one of the most underrated Normal Type there is!

SPLI: Many SPLI members are enjoying Pokémon OR/AS these days, but some are still playing Pokémon X/Y. Which Pokémon game for the Nintendo 3DS do you prefer?

Derrick: I am mainly playing on ORAS because of the new VGC rules, but I am going to have to say X/Y for the mere fact of character customization. I felt unique going into battle.

SPLI: Thank you for taking the time to speak with us! We wish you luck with your future Normal Gym challenges!

If you would like to challenge Derrick, please visit the Normal Gym page and fill out the challenge form!

What You Missed: Eon Ticket StreetPass Day!

Here at SPLI, we hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with friends, family and StreetPasses! To celebrate National StreetPass weekend and share the exclusive Eon Ticket DLC for Pokemon ORAS, SPLI organized a little meetup at McDonald’s in New Hyde Park on 11/30.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We had a great turnout, with many new faces joining us to get StreetPasses and Eon Tickets for their Pokemon games. Many SPLI members were excited about the location because this event was held at the “McMansion”, which is the fanciest McDonald’s on Long Island! We were permitted to use the private upstairs area for the event, and it was awesome despite being intended for kids birthday parties. Some members traveled from as far as NYC and Suffolk County to attend the event!

We battled Pokemon, sought out Super Secret Bases, some members even “Settled it in Smash”, and of course we splurged on greasy french fries! It was a lot of fun and we are so THANKFUL (get it?) to have enjoyed a SPLI event with so many enthusiastic members during National StreetPass Weekend! Thanks to everyone who joined us for Eon Ticket StreetPass Day!

National StreetPass Weekend!

National StreetPass Weekend

Nintendo is kicking off the Thanksgiving Weekend early by spreading the word that this weekend is officially a National StreetPass Weekend! Starting today, if you visit any local Nintendo Zone (which can be found at various retail and fast food locations such as Best Buy, McDonald’s and Starbucks, ask your local store and see if they have it!) you can get a StreetPass from someone from out of state or even another country! During National StreetPass Weekend, the StreetPass relays from Nintendo Zone get shuffled around and everyone gets a TON of StreetPasses! This will help everyone to complete all of these new Puzzle Swap puzzle panels that were recently released for Pikmin 3, Sonic Boom and Ultimate NES Remix! And if you’re a Pokemon fan, StreetPass is the ONLY way to receive the special Eon Ticket DLC, which unlocks a new island in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire!

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to participate in National StreetPass Weekend. If you’re in NYC, you can stop by Nintendo World Store and get a StreetPass there! Of course, you can also find StreetPass NYC members StreetPassing in the area, so the Eon Ticket DLC will probably be quite easy to find if you’re in the city this weekend!

Pokemon ORAS Eon Ticket

Long Islanders can also meetup with SPLI on Sunday, 11/30 for Eon Ticket StreetPass Day! We’re going to be at the lovely Townhouse McDonald’s in New Hyde Park from 4-6pm on Sunday and we will be distributing the Eon Ticket for anyone who joins us! We do ask that since we’re hosting this at McDonalds, if you plan to stay more than 15 minutes you must purchase some food. But if you want to quickly stop by just to get a StreetPass and then go on your way, that’s totally fine (and free) too!

We hope you all enjoy National StreetPass Weekend and have a Happy Thanksgiving as well!

NICK’S MARATHON PARTNERS WITH LOCAL RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

NICK’S MARATHON PARTNERS WITH LOCAL RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

Video Game Themed Fundraiser To Benefit Long Island Charity Once Again

New York, NY – November 17, 2014 – Nick’s Marathon, a unique annual fundraising event, has once again partnered with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island to honor the memory of leukemia victim Nicholas Capobianco, and share his love of video games with children and families in need.

The 2014 Nick’s Marathon will kick-off at 8pm on Friday, November 21st, and run through Sunday, November 23rd. The event will all be streamed live at nicksmarathon.org.

Every year, a group of childhood friends spend 48 consecutive hours playing video games as a special tribute to Nicholas, an avid gamer and beloved friend whose life was tragically cut short by cancer. Nick was first diagnosed with leukemia when he was just 3 years old, and he spent the next four years of his life bravely facing chemotherapy, spinal taps, and spinal and cranial radiation. At age 7, Nick participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony for a brand new facility that would serve as a “home away from home” for families with sick children: the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.

“When Nicholas was sick, I was constantly fighting rush hour traffic both to and from the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, often with Nick vomiting on the way,” says Nick’s mother Meg. The Capobianco family would have been perfect candidates to take advantage of the House’s comfortable, convenient, and extremely affordable amenities. However, when the House opened in 1986, Nick was fortunate enough to not need the House’s services, as his cancer was finally in remission.

“Even though we never spent a night in the House, participating in the Grand Opening ceremony was an important moment in Nick’s life. It gave him a special opportunity to put his hospital days behind him, and open a new healthy chapter in his life,” Meg says. “And for that, we have always remained grateful to the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island.”

Twenty years after that ribbon cutting ceremony, Nick was shocked to discover that his cancer had returned. As he had done when he was a child, he once again fought bravely. But despite an inspiring level of strength and courage, Nick ultimately lost his battle to cancer on June 12th, 2008.

In the wake of Nick’s death, a group of his family and childhood friends formed Nick’s Marathon, an annual event that keeps Nick’s spirit and passion for video games alive, all while raising money for charity. The group plays video games for 48 straight hours, live-streams it all online at nicksmarathon.org, and asks those who watch to donate to the cause.

Because of Nick’s connection to the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, Nick’s Marathon will once again raise money to provide the House with new video games, to be delivered to the House by Santa himself at a Holiday party at the House on December 11th. Last year, Nick’s Marathon provided the House with an Xbox One, a PlayStation 4, a Nintendo Wii U, several new Nintendo 3DS’s and PlayStation Vitas, and games and accessories for each system. In July of this year, Nick’s Marathon delivered another batch of new games and accessories to the House, so that they would continue to have all of the latest releases.

Matt Campo, Executive Director at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, says, “For two years now, Nick’s Marathon has delivered countless smiles to the House that Love Built! With this donation, the children and families we serve are able to find an escape from their challenges for a short period of time. The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is grateful to Nick’s Marathon and all of their supporters for their generosity in loving memory of their dear friend, Nick Capobianco. They spread joy not only during the holiday season, but throughout the year with their lasting gift!”

A video game can be a wonderful and powerful distraction when things are at their worst. Nick, a dedicated fan of the hobby, understood that all too well. Through this partnership between Nick’s Marathon and the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, a new generation can also enjoy access to all of the latest video games when they need them most.

About Nick’s Marathon

Nick’s Marathon was created in September 2008 by Alan Noah and Dr. James Brief, two friends of Nicholas Capobianco who wanted to do something positive, charitable, and fun to honor the memory of a man who died far too young. The annual event raises money by live-streaming a 48-hour marathon of video game playing, and asking those who watch online to donate to the cause. The organization was granted tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status from the United States Internal Revenue Service in September 2012.
